Mission and History
At Cancer Support Community Greater NY & CT, it is our mission to uplift and strengthen people impacted by cancer by providing support, fostering compassionate communities, and breaking down barriers to care.
We strive to create welcoming communities of free support for everyone impacted by cancer – adults, teens, children and families – all free of charge.
Our innovative programs and services are an essential complement to medical care, providing compassionate support through individual and family/group programming in-person, online, or by telephone.
History
After being diagnosed with ovarian cancer and connecting with the Wellness Community, Gilda Radner dreamed of having an informal, welcoming place where people with cancer, along with their family and friends, can come together to laugh and cry, exchange information and experiences, and support one another through the cancer journey.
1995: The first Gilda’s Club opened in New York City, fulfilling Gilda Radner’s dream to create a welcoming place for cancer support.
2001: Gilda’s Club Westchester opened its signature red doors to serve Westchester, Rockland, and lower Fairfield counties.
2009: Gilda’s Club and the Wellness Community joined forces to become Cancer Support Community. Today, there are over 175 network partners within the Cancer Support Community, making it the largest professionally-led nonprofit network of cancer support worldwide.
2020: The Covid-19 Pandemic jumpstarted our virtual services and expanded our reach enabling us to serve more members of the community impacted by cancer.
2023: In response to our growing community, we changed our name to Cancer Support Community Greater NY & CT and officially began serving the greater NY & CT areas.
